Okra (Bhindi) Cultivation:
Climate and Soil:
* Okra thrives in tropical and subtropical climates with a long, warm, and humid growing
season.
* Growth is more vigorous during the rainy season compared to spring/summer.
* Seeds fail to germinate below 20°C, with an optimum germination temperature of 29°C.
* Okra can be grown on all types of soils that are friable.
* It grows best in light soils ranging from sandy loam to loam.
* Okra can tolerate slightly acidic soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 6.8.
Agronomic Practices:
* Sowing Time:
* North Indian plains (spring): February-March.
* Rainy season (throughout India): June-July.
* Optimum sowing time for seed crop: Middle of June.
* Seed Rate:
* Up to 15th February: 15-18 kg/acre.
* March sowing: 8-10 kg/acre.
* June-July sowing: 4-6 kg/acre.
* Seed Treatment: Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing.
* Sowing Method:
* February-March: On ridges.
* June-July: On flat ground.
* Spacing: Row to row: 45 cm; Plant to plant: 15 cm. Wider spacing can be adopted for late
sowing.
* Manures and Fertilizers:
* Incorporate 15-20 tonnes of well-rotten farmyard manure before sowing.
* Apply 36 kg of N (80 kg of Urea) per acre on soils of average fertility.
* Apply half of the N at sowing and the rest as top-dressing after the first picking.
* Weed Control: Three to four hoeing’s. First hoeing at two weeks, subsequent hoeing’s at
fortnightly intervals.
* Irrigation:
* Sow in proper soil moisture.
* First irrigation after 4-5 days of sowing.
* Subsequent irrigations at 10–12-day intervals.
* Less irrigation required during the rainy season.
* Total of 10-12 irrigations are typically needed.
* In light textured soils, alternate saline-sodic groundwater with good quality canal water
and incorporate 24 q/acre of rice straw mulch.
